-Eva Jospin, one of the most prominent artists on the contemporary scene, is the face of Vanity Fair’s special art cover for @artbasel Paris. For the duration of a photo shoot, Laetitia Casta becomes the heroine of the works of the artist who has fascinated us for over two decades with her embroidered and cardboard-sculpted landscapes. Eva Jospin, whose work has been admired in Venice, the Palace of Versailles, and even the Palais des Papes in Avignon, is preparing to take over the most iconic Parisian exhibition space at the end of this year: the Grand Palais. This is an additional, if not the ultimate, recognition for this contemporary artist. –Our biggest edition ever. ‘There is something deeply unsettling about the idea that, beneath centuries of civilisation, an animal still throbs within us,’ reveals Sofia Lucas. We can rationalise, debate, create political systems and philosophical theories, but deep down, the spark that drives us is the same as ever: the urge to survive, to seek food, to protect what is ours, to desire what we do not have. Recognising this is perhaps the most radical form of humanity: accepting that the animal in us is not a flaw, but a root. That there is no true civilisation without confronting this instinctive, sometimes contradictory, always vital part of ourselves.
