On the day of the June cover shoot, Mona Tougaard—a Danish model and fashion world darling—was celebrating her 24th birthday. Having previously starred in the August 2021 issue of #VogueItalia dedicated to Naples (coinciding with Italy’s victory at the European Championship), Mona flew to Puglia—amidst the sea and olive groves of the Itria Valley—for a new story inspired by the lightness of summer. The weather, however, took an unexpected turn: “I thought I’d be in the sun and heat, but instead it was pouring rain and cold. Yet, I think the images—with such unusual light—are even more special.” It was precisely this suspended, melancholic atmosphere that made the shoot so intense. The intimate, romantic eye of @MalickBodian—shooting his first cover for #VogueItalia—combined with the styling by @TonneGood, perfectly captures Mona’s essence. “I am sentimental and deep. I’m only interested in connections and conversations that go far beneath the surface,” she tells @SofiVigano in the cover interview. The covers of this issue of Harper’s Bazaar pay homage to World Cultural Heritage—specifically, to the two grand dreams that Antoni Gaudí envisioned and brought to life. The first was Casa Milà—popularly known as La Pedrera—one of the most evocative works of Modernist architecture. The second was his masterpiece: the most-visited monument in Spain and the tallest church in the world—the Basilica of the Sagrada Família—which, this month, also inaugurates its fifth tower, thereby crowning the aspirations of the Catalan genius. These two covers feature a fusion of fashion and art, thereby demonstrating the cultural value of this industry.
